A genius among inferior souls

"...I bring today a new legend to support his theory; today, I add a new saint to the martyrology, for I am to write the history of one of those illustrious unfortunates, overwhelmed with poetry and passion, who came after so many others to serve in this low world the rude apprenticeship of genius among inferior souls… A lamentable tragedy is the life of Edgar Poe! His death, a horrible unravelling of the drama, where horror is increased by trivialities!"

— Charles Baudelaire on Edgar Allan Poe, in Histoires extraordinaires, the first collection of Poe’s short stories translated in French.
