The soul of the ruins perished not!

The axe and hammer of the priest black-robed
Struck down the holy idols of the temples;
And yet the soul of the ruins perished not!
It climbed the heaven's spaces as a star
Until new sculptured lilies came to life
In master minds, the gardens of the wise.
Thus axe and hammer of the priest black-robed
Broke not the holy idols of the temples!

  1. "His funeral was a major event of the Greek resistance: the funerary poem composed and recited by fellow poet Angelos Sikelianos roused the mourners and culminated in an angry demonstration of a 100,000 people against Nazi occupation."
    Why?

  2. Palamas was a fascist, antisemit and a supporter of the Axis but because he was considered a National Poet, some commies took advantage of his funeral where thousands of people attended and caused riots.
