August 26, on the night from Saturday to Sunday, in the midst of the folk festival in the city of Chemnitz, former Karl-Marx-Stadt, happened an outrageous murder of 35-year-old Daniel Hillig, a German citizen, carpenter, father of German-Cuban descent by two migrants: 23-year-old Syrian and 22-year-old Iraqi “refugees” who reportedly stabbed him up to 25 times. Currently, they are held in the custody. Before the victim died in the hospital, he told the story to the ambulance crew and the police. The man was accompanied by two friends of Russian descent who got injured as well.
The folk festival was cancelled later on Sunday by the city administration. Throughout the day, over 1,000 Germans gathered in the center of Chemnitz. Occasionally, Arab immigrants were chased away from the city center. The police arrived, but wasn’t strong enough to block the protests, so already on Sunday a spontaneous demonstration across Chemnitz took place.
On Monday, August 27, the civic movement “Bürgerbewegung Pro Chemnitz” announced an official commemorative demonstration in the center of Chemnitz. The police registered it and got ready for approximately 2,000 people on the “right” side and 1,000 people on the left “side” of the protest (demonstration and counter-demonstration). However, eventually, 6,000 showed up on the right-wing side and 1,000 on the left-wing. Soon enough, it has become clear that the police wasn’t able to handle possible riots. Total number of protesters against the migrant policy of Chancellor Angela Merkel on August 27 exceeded 10,000 people.
Activists of Der III. Weg party, who not so long ago held the May 1 manifestation in this nationalist-friendly city, were present en masse at the rally. “Young nationalists” of JN-NPD arrived in Chemnitz, too. Actually, the entire spectrum of German right-wing / third positionist forces were present there and intensified their activities in the aftermath of first protests, which will continue no doubt: Ein Prozent für unser Land, Identitarian Movement, AfD, and others.
The left-wing counter-demonstration dared to approach the commemorative demonstration on August 27 only at 100 meter distance. Both sides were throwing bottles and chanting slogans against each other. Nationalists chanted “We are the people,” “Get lost” and “You are not welcome.” Later some protesters burned pyrotechnics, which was used by the police as a pretext to apply water cannons and demand the cancellation of the manifestation. Instead, the protesters started marching across the city.
The manifestation ended with speeches, after which the participants went home. Police followed them to the train stations and cars. Sometimes the protesters from opposing sides clashed. 9 people got injured in these fights.
As it was easy to predict, German media barely mentioned the circumstances of the shocking murder. They only wrote about “right-wing extremists” exploiting the situation for their own political purposes and chanting “neo-Nazi slogans,” condemned “the shame of Saxony,” the land known for its freethinking people and high electoral results of nationalist parties, as well as blamed the murder on the decrease of the police personnel in Saxony instead of the EU migrant policy.
However, the reaction of regular citizens proves that the bifurcation point in the German political climate is near. The mechanisms of imposed guilt can no longer serve as a shield for the political agenda firmly rejected by the Germans.
